    New businesses are popping up in the city as the pandemic lingers in the nation. The newest addition is going to be the Countryside Car Wash, which will be located at 406 Central Ave. The city sold the property to Rick Jara, whose family owns and operates Taco Bell in town. The property used to house Brookside Deli and the Shafter Press office. Jara will be building the first drive-thru car wash in Shafter.   • 200 new virus cases this past week in the city

    The city had 200 new cases of covid-19 in the last week, according to reports. That brings total number of cases since the pandemic began to 3,085 with about 1,135 presumed as recovered. The campaign to get residents to wear masks has seen higher participation, enabling residents to go shopping or get gas with their masks on. The school district has begun opening classrooms again for in-person learning, ordering Richland School District employees back to work.   • Newsom lifts stay-at-home order, puts Kern back in purple tier

    On Monday, Jan. 25, Gov. Gavin Newsom released the state from the curfew and placed 54 counties back in the most-restrictive purple tier. Newsom also lifted his stay-at-home order. According to Newsom, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California counties are in the purple tier now.   • Property crimes on the rise in the city

    There has been a rise in property crimes, including theft, in the last year, Shafter Police Chief Kevin Zimmermann said. He said one factor that has played a "more significant role" than the pandemic in drug and property crimes has been the release of thousands of state inmates ordered by Gov. Gavin Newsom in July.   • City reinstates online utility payment option

    Residents can now pay their utility bills online again after the payment system was restored. Customers may pay online or via telephone. The recent bills were sent the week of Jan. 11 through Jan. 15. These bills did not include payments made on or after Dec. 1, 2020. Autopay will resume Feb. 2.   • Peters' Arvin location 'total loss' after fire

    Peters Funeral Home in Arvin was one of several businesses damaged after a number of fires in the area. The funeral home at 600 Tucker St., two abandoned buildings and an antique boutique off Bear Mountain Boulevard sustained damage after four fires ripped through the area.     The city is still offering free brush and limb collection until the end of February. Those residents who live south of Lerdo Highway can expect the city to pick up limbs in their neighborhoods from now to Jan. 31, and Feb.16 to Feb. 28.     A 23-year-old Wasco resident was killed after being shot on Poplar Avenue the day after Christmas. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office reported that on Dec. 26, Vicente Hinojosa Regalado was shot in the 1500 block of Poplar Avenue. He died on the sidewalk at the scene. Regalado’s killing was ruled a homicide after cause of death was declared multiple gunshot wounds.     The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune will have new offices beginning Monday, Feb. 1. The paper's new address: 455 Kern Street, Ste E., Shafter, facing Central Avenue. The City of Shafter is selling the building at 406 Central Avenue where the Press is now, moving there 10 years ago after a fire destroyed its previous office near Five Points.
