With the enactment of AB617 into law, 10 communities in California were chosen as "disadvantaged communities" and were selected to have a steering committee create a plan that will improve their air quality and environmental issues. Shafter was one of two communities selected in the San Joaquin Valley, along with South Fresno. The criteria used to deem communities "disadvantaged" were exposure to pollutants in the air, as well as high rates of health problems and economic factors such as...
The cities of Wasco and Shafter have a rivalry which is one of the fiercest and oldest rivalries in the county, if not the state. Students face off on the gridiron and on the courts, and the residents of the respective cities have grown up with the tradition of disliking the other community. "The rivalry is in our blood, really," said Marco Montoya, a 1978 SHS graduate. There is one exception to the rule, however. Each year, on the football field of Wasco High School, the residents of both...

If you have lived in town any length of time, you have met this long-time resident of Shafter. He is colorful, feisty and a great storyteller. James Holt has been in business in downtown Shafter at his Central Avenue location for 38 years. Holt is selling off his equipment and inventory, calling it quits. "I have sold about $10,000 worth of equipment so far, but I still have quite a bit of equipment, tools, and antiques left. I am trying to get rid of all of it by the end of the month," he said...

Illustrating this point is an instance where a little library helped a little boy in distress. About 3 years ag...

This past Monday night and Tuesday morning at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, the TRUTH Forum was long, and at times tense, but successful. We had great attendance, a lot of public input and solid interaction between the public, the supervisors and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Now, everyone measures success differently, and you can disagree with me on what constitutes success, but when the community turns out to speak in such large numbers about a subject that means so much to them I call it a success. You may recall, the TRUTH Act a...
