Born on June 11, 1937, in McGehee, Arkansas, Freddie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Freddie enlisted in the Army in 1957. He served and was Reserve until 1963. Shafter Mayor Chad Givens was disinvited as GROW Academy's keynote graduation speaker last week, after he said he refused to remove a Bible reference from his remarks. Despite being listed in the program for Thursday night's graduation, school officials announced at the event that Givens was "unable to attend."School officials had asked to see Givens' speech before the ceremony took place, the mayor said. The Shafter High football stadium was the site for a celebration as students walked across the stage as seniors and stepped down as graduates. There were 410 graduates this year, one of the largest classes in Shafter High history. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the City of Wasco accepted a $50,000 state grant to fight the illegal sale and marketing of alcohol to minors. City Manager Scott Hurlbert said, "It's just a piece of the entire policing effort in Wasco. This portion helps fund targeted efforts related to improper sale of alcoholic beverages." Kern County firefighters were dispatched at 12:14 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, to a 3-alarm fire at an abandoned home on the 1000 block of 6th Street. Multiple dwellings were affected, and abandoned vehicles also caught on fire. Thirty-nine Kern County firefighters worked on the fire, which involved eight fire engines and one fire truck. Andy came into the Wasco Animal Shelter as a surrender. He is approximately a 4-6-year-old male Queensland mix. He is great with staff and selective with dogs.
