President, Friends of the Shafter Library
The Friends of the Shafter Library have been busy this year! Here are the goals that we set for ourselves in 2024 and how we fared:
1. Continue Shafter Library History project: Rick Penner updated the Friends on his progress in a May 10th report. Work on this is ongoing.
2. Paint mural on Book Drop at library entrance - complete.
3. Paint interactive balloon mural by side entrance (on parking lot/GAF classroom side of library) - complete
4. Install fiberglass bench with book art (The Little Engine That Could) painted by Lorena Castillo - completed Nov. 2024
5. Develop fundraising structure for Dia Del Nino and Dia De Los Muertos - still in process.
6. Convert postcard mural image on the parking lot side of GAF classroom building into merchandise to benefit the Friends. (Stickers and postcards are currently available in the library, with tote bags hopefully coming soon.) - complete
We also kept the Imagination Room stocked with toys and had members stop in weekly to clean up and organize the room.
We used funds to support the Dia Del Nino and Comic Con events.
Little Free Library update:
● A new LFL was added to Mannel Park near the playground and was painted by SLLC art teacher Nancy Becerra and her students. She will also be repainting the Veterans Park LFL.
● The Kiwanis LFL near the pool is being repainted with a "Dive into Books" theme (Lorena Castillo will be the artist).
● The Rotary Club LFL was also put up again in the redesigned Stringham Park near the new bus stop on James Street and Lerdo Highway.
● La Rosa de Sharon Assembly of God church and Lions Club will also be placing a LFL in the Tulare Arms apartments located on West Tulare Avenue behind Apple Market.
