Rotary gives grant to Maple School

The Shafter Rotary Club hosted Dr. Julie Bousch, principal at Maple School, at a recent club meeting.

Bousch made a presentation on the newly formed Maple School Foundation that was created to fund projects that the school has planned for the future. Maple School is in the middle of a major renovation project that saw the demolition of the cafeteria, classrooms and administrative buildings, making room for new structures and giving the school a full makeover.

Bousch campaigned at the state level, asking anyone who could help for assistance in their goal of getting new school buildings. The current buildings had major structural problems, including leaks in ceilings, no air conditioning in the majority of the buildings and classrooms, and very cramped quarters.

Once local politicians Jean Fuller and Rudy Salas got involved in the project, things started to happen. By the end of the year, the school will have gone through a total renovation, with the administration buildings being torn down this week. Inspired by their story, the Shafter Rotary Club decided to help and presented Dr. Bousch with a check for $500.

Dr. Bousch said that the foundation is grateful for the donation and is dedicated to making sure the school will have the means to keep the school beautiful -- one that is current and up to date on equipment to meet all of their educational needs.

The club also welcomed another new member, Rick Woody, owner and operator of Peters Funeral Homes. Woody has been a part of the Shafter community for over two decades, serving the communities of Shafter and Wasco with their family-operated business.
