The Shafter Kiwanis Club held a luncheon to honor the Terrific Kids from the Richland School District. Each month, students are nominated by teachers who believe that the students has displayed improvement either in the classroom, playground or in citizenship, being a good example of the character traits that the Terrific Kids program personifies.
The Terrific Kids Program is a national student recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance. "Terrific" is an acronym for thoughtful, enthusiastic, respectful, responsible, inclusive, friendly, inquisitive and capable.
Students work with their classroom teacher to establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance and school work. Students who achieve their goals are recognized by their respective Kiwanis Clubs. As a result of this program, students build character and develop leadership skills. They also attain important life skills known as development assets that help them make smart choices.
This month, the honorees were:
Richland Junior High: Brooklyn McDowell and Raul Barraza Alcaraz. They were presented by Acting Principal Francisca Garcia.
Redwood Elementary School: Alex Morales. Principal Luis Rodriguez was accompanied by Vice Principal Janean Johnson.
Golden Oak Elementary: Dashon Edwards..Principal Anamarie Mendez and Assistant Principal Raymond Carr awarded the honor.
Each student receiving an award gets a nice lunch, pencil, bumper sticker, certificate and other items.
