10 years ago: June 2, 2010

Caroline Aguirre, a Shafter High School sophomore, headed to the University of California at Santa Cruz for the summer to participate in study of marine mammals.

20 years ago: June 14, 2000

Four Richland Junior High students were nominated to suggest street names for Shafter's new Freedom homes sub-division. Yvette Cortez was one of the students to suggest Ohanneson Avenue, Shafter's first mayor, Phil Ohanneson (1938-1942).

30 years ago: June 20, 1990

Richland Lerdo School District applied for the GATE program. The only school program before the GATE program for advanced gifted students was called Project Challenge.

40 years ago: June 11, 1980

Shafter High graduated senior Paul Bender won the state discuss championship at UC Berkeley. He was the first Shafter state champion in 20 years.
