Cooling center — There is a cooling center in Shafter at the Walker Senior Center at 505 Sunset Ave. The center is open from 1 to 8 p.m. For more information, call Kern County General Services at 661-868-1000.
Summer food service program — Lost Hills Wonderful Park is sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be provided to all children who are 18 years of age and younger at 14688 Lost Hills Road, Lost Hills, starting July 19 through July 30. Breakfast is served at 7:30 to 8 a.m. Lunch is served from 12:30 to 1 p.m.
Shafter Community Vacation Bible School — The Shafter Community Vacation Bible School Kingdom Chronicles, “Standing Strong in the Battle for Truth” will be held June 21-25 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shafter Ford Theater at 1101 E. Lerdo Highway. Children who are entering kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2021-22 school year are eligible. Allensworth State Historic Park — There is a traveling exhibit at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park exploring the rich, long history of African Americans in rural California. The exhibit is from June 19 to Aug. 1 at the park at 4011 Grant Drive, Earlimart. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset.
Tuesday
Senior lunch program — The senior sack program gives out lunches to seniors every first and third Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Golden Gleaners. Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St., Wasco.
Thursday
Wasco Recreation & Park Board — Meetings are on every 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Hall at Barker Park, Wasco.
Truth ministries — Truth Ministries: A Faith Based 12-Step Program providing fellowship recovery will be held on Thursday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church, 400 Kern St. The program begins on Feb. 25. Call 661-746-4969 for more information.
Friday
Food giveaway — The Impact Program is a weekly food giveaway provided to anyone in need, Fridays beginning at 7 a.m., first come, first serve. Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St., Wasco.
Wasco CARE— There will be a Wasco CARE (Career Awareness Recruitment Education) event at Cormick Park on Friday, June 18 from noon to 3 p.m.
Saturday
Juneteenth celebration — There will be a celebration of Black history on Saturday, June 19 for Juneteenth. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the park on 15th and D street in Wasco. All are invited to enjoy live music, a choir, poetry reading, food and vendors. This event is free to everyone. All are welcome to come enjoy the afternoon of heritage, culture and history.
Drive-thru pancake breakfast — The Wasco VFW are hosting a Drive-Thru Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, June 19 from 8 to 11 a.m. The VFW will be celebrating their 75th anniversary. Call to purchase tickets at 661-758-1935 or visit 603 E. St., Wasco.
Fireworks — The Shafter Fireworks Celebration will be Saturday, July 3 at the Shafter High School Recreation Field, 526 Mannel Ave. Gates open at 6 p.m. There will be food, fun, music and a 50/50 raffle. Everyone is welcome. No alcohol or BBQs permitted.
