Wasco Union High School held its 2021- 2022 Winner's Circle Awards Ceremony for graduating seniors. Over 125 students were celebrated for their academic achievements. Many scholarships were presented to those that demonstrated superior commitment to their studies.
The Wasco Community Scholarship Association gave out a total of $40,000 in scholarships to six students going on to a four-year colleges, Roxanne Dominguez, Janelly Garcia, Jasmine Gutierrez, Celia Jacob, Brianna Moreno and Ixchel Sanchez, along with three going to a two-year colleges: Diana Flores, Madyson Jimenez and Perla Martinez Rodriguez.
"Our goal is to help them continue with their education and provide them with the means to do so," said David Ward, president of the WCSA.
Scholarship recipient Madyson Jimenez said, "This will allow me to save money on tuition and other related expenses. I feel excited to start my path into adult life by going to college and pursuing my goals."
Sofia Reyes Parra received the Wonderful Education Program Scholarship, which will provide her with $28,000 over her four-year college degree.
"Today, I feel blessed for my next chapter. I will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study ag business and then return to give back to my community."
Jackelyn Villanueva received the same scholarship.
"I feel accomplished and look forward to what the future holds. The award means so much because, after these four years, I can see all my hard work has paid off. Without the support of my family and friends, I would not be here."
There were 112 students that won the Golden State Seal Merit for mastery in six subjects: English, math, science, US history and two other subjects of their selection.
Recipient Edgar Aguilar was ecstatic.
"It feels great being recognized and acknowledged for my efforts. With this, I am motivated to continue on my way to becoming a software engineer."
Principal Sunni Dobbs said, "The class has certainly left its unique mark on Wasco High, and I know this is just the beginning of what they can accomplish. They will reflect positively on our community as they continue the pursuit of their dreams."
Other awards were given out, including distinction in art, music, drama, leadership, vocational, agriculture, social science, language and most improved student.
Director of Athletics and Activities Joshua Huddleston presented the Tiger of the Year athletic award to two students, Jacob Ruiz and Ixchel Sanchez.
"They represent what we see as the ideal student-athlete as they have excelled in academia, athleticism and extracurricular activities.
Over 440 people attended the ceremony.
"It was an amazing turnout and was a chance for students, families and school staff to get together to recognize the students' accomplishments throughout their time at Wasco HIgh. It showcased the best that we have to offer," said Huddleston.
The winner of the AG Award, Henry Marin Acosta, said," I feel thankful that I got to share this moment with my family and friends. The best part is that not only do I feel grateful, but they do as well."
Christoper Padilla was acknowledged for his 3.99 GPA.
"It was a long journey, and I am glad it came to this conclusion that I strived so much for."
Parents were overjoyed.
"This is special for us because she is going to college, something that I didn't do. I want her to have a career and be happy," said Olivia Jimenez of her daughter, Madyson.
This was an opportunity for staff to also be recognized for their dedication to the students' success.
"I know that each of you have helped change lives by the care and concern you put into your work every day. I am proud of our outstanding and committed team," said Dobbs.
Students were left with an inspiring message by Principal Dobbs.
"You can do anything your heart desires, and you can achieve all that you set your mind to."
