NEW: Rivalry game – Wasco High/Shafter High football game is Friday, Oct. 18, in Wasco. Junior varsity kickoff is at 5 p.m.
NEW: Medical careers class – Shafter Library & Learning Center class, Thursday, Oct 13, at
4-7 p.m. Join medical professionals as they share about their careers, teach CPR skills and provide hands-on scenarios on how to respond to those in medical need.
NEW: Painting and potting – The Shafter Library & Learning Center offers Family Night of Flowerpot Painting and Potting Thursday. Oct. 20, 4-6:30 p.m., at 236 James St. Local artist Lorena Castillo will be creating and displaying a fall-themed painting on a flowerpot that those attending will replicate or make into their own.After artistically painting on a flowerpot, families will then use their creation to learn all about succulent plant, 5-6:30 p.m.
NEW: History of La Colonia – The Shafter Shafter Historical Society invites you to a history lecture featuring speaker Deanna Rodriguez Root. The topic will be the History of La Colonia and its personalities. Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Shafter Library & Learning Center, 236 James St.
NEW: Movie night – Shafter Pride will be hosting a free Community Movie Night showing of Disney Pixar’s “CoCo” at the new Shafter High Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22. Doors open 7 p.m.; movie starts 7:30 p.m. No outside food or drink and no chairs. Bring blankets on the field or sit in the stadium. This year, SHS will be creating an Ofrenda on Campus. If you would like to add a loved one’s picture to Ofrenda, bring it to the movie night. Please bring a copy of a photo and not an original.
NEW: Bulky waste – Kern County Public Works will sponsor a bulky waste collection event Saturday, Oct. 15 at 329 Central Valley Hwy., 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bulky waste includes household appliances, furniture, barbecue grills, tires without rims, mattresses and large household items.

Classes at library – The Shafter Library & Learning Center’s fall semester registration continues. Classes will be offered as part of after-school program, Monday-Friday from 4:05 to 7 p.m. Classes include:
Grades 1-8: Art Through All Mediums, Art Around the World, Future Scientists, Cooking, Baking, Spanish, Keyboarding/Computer Programming, Crafts, Literacy Lab, Lego Robotics, iMath Games/Tutoring.
Pre-K programs we will have classes depending on age group as follows: Pre-K (3-5 yrs) English, Pre-K (3-5 yrs) Spanish, and PreK (1-3 yrs) Bilingual for Toddlers.
Family Classes Family Bilingual Night and Family Art Night: Bakersfield College Courses & Certificate Programs will continue to be offered. To register for any Bakersfield College classes you’ll need to visit their website directly.

Richland School Board – Meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at Golden Oak Cafeteria, 195 S. Wall St.
Shafter City Council – Meetings are held at City Hall on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
TUESDAY
NEW: Wasco City Council Meetings every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. Meetings are held at 746 8th St. Wasco 6:00 p.m.
Wasco Woman’s Club – Meetings are at the Clubhouse, 1601 7th St., on the second Tuesday of the month. There is a $15fee for the lunch meetings.
Senior Lunch Program – Every first and third Tuesday of the month: Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St. Sack lunches for seniors will be given out at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Golden Gleaners.

Shafter Rotary – Meeting at 7 a.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall.
Shafter Kiwanis – Meeting Wednesdays at 12 p.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall.
THURSDAY
Wasco High School Board – Meetings the second Thursday of the month at 1900 7th St. in Room 202, or alternatively in Library Room 1101. The agenda is on the WHS website.
Wasco Recreation and Park Board – Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Hall at Barker Park.
Food distribution – Shafter Recreation and the Gleaners have food distribution every first and third Thursday of each month at the W.C. Walker Senior Center, 505 Sunset Ave.

Depot Museum – The Shafter Depot Museum is open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is at 150 Central Valley Highway.
