Youth soccer game to build bonds with law enforcement

The Amigos F.C. will host a friendly soccer game on Friday, October 14th, against local law enforcement, including deputies and CHP officers. The event will take place at Palm Avenue Middle School.

"Everyone is super excited. It's going to be a fun day full of entertainment," Sergio Ramirez, manager and head coach, said. "It will be a great game to watch."

He added, "After the game, law enforcement will bond with the team members and share advice."

With this, he said it's important for their players to have other role models to help them.

"Our goal is for our players to develop trust with law enforcement. Unfortunately, youth see them as just punishment. We want them to see a brighter side of what they do," Ramirez said.

In addition to Ramirez, two other coaches, Manuel Hernandez and Alex Morales, assist him. All three donate their time. Together they bring a passion and love for the sport they share with the youth on the team.

Amigos F.C. is a soccer club for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Based in Wasco, it is open to both boys and girls. They play in the Bakersfield Champions League Club and practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Ramirez said that youth are learning life skills to prepare them for their future.

"They take away leadership, respect and responsibility values. We encourage students to dream big and work hard to reach their goals inside and outside the classroom and field," Ramirez said.

He added, "It's not all about winning. Whether your win or lose, you always learn."

The team was launched in 2020.

"Since we started, the City of Wasco has been good to us. We appreciate their ongoing support of our young people that make up the team."

Ramirez said he also counts on the support of their parents.

"Without them, we wouldn't have the success we enjoy now. We treat each other like family."

He is especially grateful to Palm Avenue Middle School counselor Elena Contreras for her help in making the field available to them.

There is a $40 fee to join the league and play for Amigos F.C.

"We try to cover as much as we can with fundraising and want to be able to include as many young people as possible," Ramirez said.

There is a $5 recommended donation to attend, and the money raised will be used for uniforms and equipment. It is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the game begins at 5 p.m. They will play at 1017 Palm Avenue.
