Kiwanis host some Terrific Kids

The Shafter Kiwanis Club held their monthly Terrific Kids Luncheon at the Shafter Veterans Hall that recognizes a select few of Richland School District students who have exhibited specific traits for that month.

This month, the trait was Respectful. Each student honored was nominated by a teacher or staff member who feels that the student has displayed Respectfulness throughout the month. Those honored are invited to a special lunch, as well as awarded other items to commemorate the recognition.

For Golden Oak Elementary, students honored were Daleyza Zagal, Aaliyah Gonzalez and Bryan Perez Duarte. Kailey Alcaraz and Joel Jimenez were presented their awards by Redwood Elementary Principal Ivonne Hernandez.

Representing Sequoia Elementary, Principal Janean Johnson presented awards to Layla Ahmad Alomaisi and Elias Ali. Richland Junior High Dean of Students Mylum Nicholson gave awards to Carlie Acosta and Adolfo Palacios Perez Jr.

Terrific Kids is a program that recognizes outstanding students that demonstrate characteristics that displays the values of the program. The program promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance. "Terrific" is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.

Students work with their classroom teachers to establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance and school work. Students benefit from this program by building character, develop leadership skills, and attain important life skills known as developmental assets that help them make smart choices.
