ONGOING
Helping families – Shafter High School and the PRIDE Pantry allows the opportunity to donate directly back to the Shafter community to reach hurting families. Ways to help contribute to the PRIDE Pantry include dropping off at the SHS front office, 526 Mannel Ave. Some suggested new items needed are personal hygiene items, clothing items, household items and nonperishable food items. Waste collection – Kern County Public Works offers Shafter and Wasco households a hazardous waste collection event, Saturday, Feb. 11, at 17621 Scofield Road, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Accepted at the event are batteries, motor oil, paints, light bulbs, automotive products, cleaning products and more.

Food distribution – Kern County Human Services provides CalFresh Emergency Allotments, ending soon. February will be the last month emergency CalFresh will be provided.
Peace officer openings – Become a peace officer in a rewarding and challenging career. Shift work, safety retirement, supervise and mentor at-risk youth, growth and advancement opportunities through the Kern County Probation Department. Sandbags available – Self-serve sandbag station for Shafter residents and businesses only. The station is at 1251 E. Ash Ave. (next to the recycling drop-off).
Bookkeeping training – Free bookkeeping training program at MAOF, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation. 2130 Chester Ave., Suite 200, Bakersfield. Related occupations include accounts payable/accounts receivable clerks and payroll clerks. Shafter City Council – Meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of the month at City Hall, 336 Pacific Ave.
Wasco City Council – Meetings the first and third Tuesday of the month. Meetings are held at 746 8th St. at 6 p.m.
Wasco Woman’s Club – Meetings are at the clubhouse, 1601 7th St., on the second Tuesday of the month. There is a $15 fee for the lunch meetings.
Senior lunch program – Meetings the first and third Tuesday of the month at Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St. Sack lunches for seniors will be given out at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Golden Gleaners.

Wasco High School Board – Meetings are the second Thursday of the month at 1900 7th St. in Room 202, or alternatively in Library Room 1101. The agenda is on the WHS website.
Wasco Recreation and Park Board – Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Hall at Barker Park.
Food distribution – Shafter Recreation and the Gleaners have food distribution every first and third Thursday of each month at the W.C. Walker Senior Center, 505 Sunset Ave.

Food giveaway — The Impact Program is a weekly food giveaway provided to anyone in need, Fridays beginning at 7 a.m. First come, first served. Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St., Wasco.
