Serving the community since 1922
St. John the Evangelist Parish Catholic Church will host its annual Cinco de Mayo festival on Sunday, April 30. There will be a variety of food and live entertainment for the whole family
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army's May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
Councilman Gilberto Reyna, a parish member, has spearheaded the event since 2016. Each year 500 to 600 people attend the celebration.
"Our church groups will sell different kinds of food and drinks like aguas frescas, tamales, pozole, tostilocos, fruit cups, corn on the cob, baked potatoes and carne asada and carne al pastor tacos," Reyna said.
A wide selection of desserts, such as buñuelos, brownies, cakes, cookies and cupcakes, will be available for purchase at the free event.
There also will be games for the kids.
Live music will be provided by DJ Ayer y Hoy, DJ Roger, Voces de Mi Pueblo, Vanessa y Katy, Rosa Michell, Los Luceros de Michoacan, Fortaleza Sierreña and Edición Reservada.
"We usually end up with people, including kids, dancing. Everyone is invited."
Church groups involved in the planning of the celebration include Amigos de San Juan, Adoración Nocturna, Family Catechesis, 7 p.m. Mass Choir, Grupo de Varones, Grupo de Mujeres, Grupo de Oración Guadalupanos, Knights of Columbus, St. John's Women Society and Grupo de Oración de Renovación Carismática.
Pastor Guillermo Preciado, Reyna and the church groups have been planning since March.
"It's a simple process because each group is an expert at what they do, so it doesn't require much long-term planning, although much hard work is involved."
The event is a fundraiser for the church, and all proceeds will go into their general fund for use in all of their activities and operating costs.
Reyna said the event will be special.
"It brings parish families together and is a way to have some delicious food and spirited entertainment and at the same time help our church raise needed funds," he said. "The event will be a time for leisure. People will have fun, and that's always good for the family. All are welcome, and it is open to the community."
The event will occur at 9th Street and Griffith Avenue from 12 to 7 p.m. For more information, call the St. John the Evangelist Parish Catholic Church office at 661-758-6688.
