The Wasco Union Elementary School District is offering summer school, with classes from June Thursday, June 1, to Thursday, June 29. It will be a chance for students to keep learning during the vacation period while enjoying fun activities.
"The goal of the summer program is to provide students with an extended learning opportunity and provide them with a well-rounded education." said Maria Maldonado, Title 1 support teacher.
The program also helps students who are falling behind, allowing them to close their achievement gap.
Summer school is a haven for students with working parents who otherwise would be home alone during the break, giving them peace of mind knowing their children are cared for and safe.
The summer school will focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) education, incorporating different student activities and lessons.
Nutrition and physical activity will play a significant role in the curriculum.
From 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., there will be an academics portion. The summer enrichment camp segment will take place from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., it's the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program, a part of After School Education and Safety.
Students will also get breakfast, lunch and snacks.
There are incentives on Fridays for the students to enjoy. In the past, the school has done ice cream, cookies and other sweet treats. In addition, there will be entertainment, such as a BMX show and another show, yet to be announced.
Transportation will be available to students who need it and will be picked up at their home schools at 7:30 a.m.
Maldonado encourages parents to enroll their students in the summer program.
"Come and enjoy the learning that is going to happen and take advantage of the enrichment. It's going to be fun learning."
Registration is now open and will close on Friday, April 21. Slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Go to Parent Square or by hard copy, which will be given upon request.
