Serving the community since 1922
Esmeralda Díaz is the proud owner of Esmeralda’s Flower Shop & More, a quaint flower shop and secondhand store that offers a variety of new and gently used items. She bought the establishment from a previous owner who had the business for over 40 years, and she wants to continue with the legacy.
“I opened two years ago and have been blessed so far. The community has supported me, and for that, I am grateful. After being around for so long, the business has great potential, and I’m looking to expand and grow.”
Esmeralda sells perfume, jewelry, shoes and clothing for men, women, children and babies, along wtih nutrition products. “We have a little bit of everything.”
Her prices are economical, she said. “Many of my customers are farm laborers, so I am considerate of them because I know they work hard for their money.”
Esmeralda is a people person and said providing good customer service is a priority for her. “I’m friendly and try to make my shoppers feel comfortable and well attended.”
The flower shop is especially thriving. “I source my flowers from Los Angeles, and they are always fresh. I do arrangements for weddings, quinceaneras, funerals, baptisms and just about any occasion.”
She enjoys being helpful. “When someone comes in and has a request, I can guide them and advise them. They might want an orchid for a burial, but I’ll let them know that might not work well with the weather and suggest another.”
“I feel happy when customers say they are content with my work. It’s very rewarding and satisfying. It’s the best feeling.”
Esmeralda has over 20 years of experience in the floral industry and owned another flower shop in Bakersfield for seven years.
She said she has a unique eye for design and loves the creativity that comes with it, including “all the beautiful colors and how they can transform a room into a magical space. It’s just amazing.”
Esmeralda perfected her skills with classes she took in Los Angeles. She said she was inspired to embark on a career as a florist because she was always passionate about flowers.
It was her husband who encouraged her to follow her dreams. “If that’s what you love, pursue it.” She believes she made the right choice. “Being an entrepreneur is the best decision I could have made for me and my family. I appreciate the freedom it has given me.”
Although not from Wasco, she said she enjoys the city. “It’s a great community, and I’m glad to have opened my business here. I have grown to love the town. The people are very welcoming, and it’s just a special place.”
