A night of 'Mamma Mia!' magic

Wasco High School held its highly anticipated "Last Blast" prom, which was a great way to end the school year with a special event and a tradition that the students were proud to continue.

The theme was "Mamma Mia!" after the famous musical and the Associated Student Body was responsible for organizing the event. Mariana Gonzalez is part of ASB. "We worked hard to plan it as a whole, so I feel like everyone deserves this night."

"We chose the theme because 'Mamma Mia!' is trending right now. I really wanted the theme, so I pushed it to everyone, and they all agreed."

Hailey Coyle, the activities coordinator, said, "The ASB group this year is a great group of kids. They worked really well together and accomplished their goal of making this night special for the whole student body."

And special it was for the students with the dancing, music, food, games, decorations and just plain energy that kept the atmosphere alive all night long.

Monique Martinez took her shoes off because her feet hurt from all the dancing. "The DJ played really good 2,000 hits. I had a lot of fun dancing with my friend Bianca. Tonight was everything I expected and more."

Jennifer Lopez said, "My feet are killing me because I'm having so much fun dancing. I love the theme. It's so amazing. It's one of my favorite movies."

Students dressed in line with the theme. "The theme was 'Mamma Mia!' which is a beach theme, so when you think of a beach theme, you think of flowy dresses, and I chose something that represented that," Amy Fernandez said,

Miranda Cortez was looking forward to the prom because it was her senior year and her last dance. "I thought it would be a nice way to celebrate that, so I picked a navy blue sequenced mini-length gown with silver heels. I also spent two hours doing my hair and makeup."

She was hoping to win Prom Queen, and she did, along with King Ruben Rodriguez. Cortez said of the win, "I was very excited. It was unreal. It felt emotional, and I am so grateful to everyone who voted for me."

Teacher Melanie Yasenchak said her favorite part about the prom was "just seeing the kids have good, wholesome fun. I chaperone every dance because I love to see the kids all dressed up. They are the best students in all of Kern County."

Principal Rusvel Prado expressed gratitude: "I want to thank the ASB office for putting on a tremendous event for our student body, and a special thank you to Hailey Coyle. She is a mastermind behind all of our events at Wasco High School."
