WHS honored at Disneyland ceremony

Wasco Union High School, represented by certificated, classified and administrative staff, was recognized as a 2024 California Distinguished School at an awards ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel on May 3.

WHS is one of only 293 middle and high schools in California to be selected for the prestigious title.

The awards were announced in February by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in recognition of schools that demonstrate excellence and growth in academic achievement and ensuring a positive school climate. Wasco is one of only two high schools in Kern County to receive the award.

In 2023, Wasco students showed strong improvement in mathematics and English language arts. According to the California School Dashboard, Wasco students improved their ELA scores by nearly 19 points and their math scores by more than four points, exceeding the state average on both measures.

"I'm very proud of our students and staff and the hard work they put in post-pandemic to raise academic achievements. This award is a direct reflection of their dedication to student learning. This award, I believe, also reflects the hard work of the support staff because when students are doing well, it's because they are going to a safe, clean and healthy environment where they can focus on achieving their academic goals," Kevin Tallon, WUHS district superintendent, said.

He said the award is significant. "You don't apply for it. It is awarded after analysis of your performance on multiple measures on the California School Dashboard, so students scoring well on the state test, as well as an increase in graduation rates, good performance on metrics that measure school climate is how we were selected for the award."

Tallon said it is a testament that Wasco High students can achieve great things. "It shows that our students are doing well and continuing to thrive, and it's exciting to see them reach their goals as they move through four years of high school."

Principal Rusvel Prado also had words of celebration. "Wasco High School has been recognized as a 2024 California Distinguished School. This prestigious accolade reflects the outstanding dedication and tireless efforts of our exceptional staff, who are committed to the success of every student.

"At Wasco High, our staff's hard work, passion for education and commitment to excellence are evident in everything they do. They consistently go above and beyond to provide the highest quality of education, guidance and support, ensuring that our students are equipped for future success.

"Congratulations to the entire Wasco High School team on this remarkable achievement. We are proud of our school's legacy of excellence and look forward to continuing to inspire and educate future generations."
