A Shafter man was arrested on Friday for stealing mail from mail boxes in the Gossamer Grove community.
A police officer on patrol arrested 31-year-old William Nigro when he stopped him at approximately 3 a.m. during patrol checks in the area of Community Drive and Flowertree Drive. The
officer made the stop on the Honda Accord for a vehicle code violation.
Nigro was found to be driving on a suspended license and had an expired registration.
According to Acting Police Chief Randy Milligan, Nigro also was found in possession of several pieces of mail within the vehicle. The mail was from several different addresses in the Gossamer Grove area. Nigro also was found in possession of a U.S. Mail postal key.
Officers found a community mailbox that appeared to have been tampered with. The addresses associated with this mailbox matched at least two addresses associated with the mail in Nigro’s vehicle. Some of the mail had personal identifying information of the victims.
This was not the first time the Gossamer Grove area has been targeted by this type of crime. A couple of months ago, the Gossamer Grove area was the site of a rash of vehicle break-ins and theft of people’s mail.
Nigro was arrested for possession of personal identifying information, driving on a suspended license, possession of burglary tools and theft of mail. He was booked into the Kern County Sheriff's Office Justice Receiving Facility. Police ask that anyone with further information regarding this incident contact the Shafter Police Department at 661-746-8500.
