Jack West

April 1934 – June 14, 2024

Jack H. West, a dedicated geologist and U.S. Marine, passed away into the arms of Jesus on June 14, 2024, at the age of 90. He leaves behind a legacy of service, both to his country and to the field of geology.

Born in April 1934 as John Henry Pigg, Jr., he changed his name to Jack Henry West in 1971 (West was his mother's maiden name). Jack served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed integrity and a deep sense of duty. After his military service, he pursued his passion for finding and extracting oil and gas deposits, becoming a respected member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. His contributions at Standard Oil, Texaco, Chevron, Occidental Petroleum and as a consultant were numerous, and he was known for his unwavering commitment to his work and his colleagues.

His joys were family and friends, and his hobbies included European sports cars, Dixieland jazz music, traveling, steam engine train, and Dodger baseball. At age 89, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, which gave him great comfort in his final months, and exceeding joy upon his passing.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie West, who is courageously battling Alzheimer's disease. He also leaves behind two devoted sons, Trent and Todd, and two cherished grandchildren, Austin and Audrey. His former colleagues in the oil and gas industry and many friends will remember him fondly for his kindness, honesty, and the impact he had on their lives.

Jack will be laid to rest at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin on July 29, 2024, at 9:15 a.m. A service to honor his life and legacy will be held on that date, where family, friends, and colleagues are invited to pay their respects and celebrate his remarkable journey. If you plan to attend, RSVP to Basham & Lara Funeral Care at 661-746-4200 by Thursday, July 25, providing your name, contact information and number of attendees.

Jack will be deeply missed, but his spirit and contributions will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
