Serving the community since 1922
Central Avenue Park celebrated its grand opening with a joyful ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, July 19. The new park, designed to be a vibrant hub for families and visitors, provides a range of recreational activities and green spaces.
"It's a fantastic park that offers active sports on the basketball court and lawn area, picnic tables and multiple types of playground equipment. Also, it connects the walking path on Filburn to the walking path on Central," City Manager Scott Hurlbert said.
He thanked Assistant City Manager Maria Lara, who helped secure the funds for the park project. "And Community Development Director Keri Cobb, who started rolling the ball a few years ago, Aurelio Garcia, Kameron Arnold, the whole Public Works Department – it was a team effort. JTS Construction did a great job, and American Hydro Tech. I appreciate their hard work."
JTS Construction was the primary contractor for the site work, concrete, walls, and electrical, while American Hydro Tech was responsible for the irrigation and landscaping.
Mayor Alex Garcia was pleased with the results. "Kids need a safe environment to play with friends and family; it was just what was needed. The intersection looks better than ever."
The park sits at the northeast corner of Filburn Avenue and Central Avenue.
Councilmember Gilberto Reyna said the park was a beautiful space to exercise and added that it has many benefits.
"People get healthy when they come to parks. It improves your physical and mental health. It makes people happier."
Joseph Lopez was impressed. "I think it's amazing. It's nice to hear that thirty different plant species exist here. Excellent job to city officials for delivering on their promises and creating this wonderful park for their community."
A neighborhood resident, Enriqueta Ramirez, said, "The park turned out very well. The trees, especially, are incredible. They're the best part. When they grow, there will be a lot of shade. The playground is also fun for the kids. We are grateful they did this project and thought about our children."
Representatives of Rep. David Valadao, State Sen. Melissa Hurtado's, Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains and Supervisor David Couch attended. Miss Wasco Rose Queen 2023 Esmeralda Rodriguez also made an appearance.
"The park is exciting," Esmeralda said. "It's always packed, and it's so nice to see everyone enjoying it. There is a section for every age group, and it's great that it is so age-inclusive."
