Wrestling camp teaches on and off the mat

The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church is holding its annual Wrestling Camp this week, teaching kids on and off the mat. There were over 30 kids on hand, from novice wrestlers to competitive wrestlers looking to get back into form.

Led by Pastor Pat Coyle, the camp has been helping children for over 15 years with basic workouts to intricate moves on the mat. Coyle had the assistance of wrestlers from the Shafter Spartans youth wrestling team, as well as members of the Shafter High Generals.

The camp runs through Friday, July 27, culminating with an exhibition match and dessert on Friday night. The public is invited to the 7 p.m. event.

The wrestlers learn how to work out, complete with specific exercises that help them with fitness, flexibility and endurance. There is a theme for the camp each year, giving participants something to think about on and off the mat. This year, the theme is Romans 1:16, which contains a message of the power of God and salvation.

"Every kid can take away the knowledge that everyone who believes in the power of God can have that power within themselves," Coyle said . "In that power is the knowledge that God can overcome anything and that those who believe in Him can have that power as well."

The camp attracted Shafter, Wasco and Bakersfield kids wanting to improve their skills and get in shape for the upcoming wrestling season.

"We have been coming to this camp for a couple of years now, and it is just great," said Jose Ontevera, who was there with his 10-year-old son, Eli. "This camp doesn't just teach them wrestling moves. It also gives them stuff to think about in their everyday life. It is just really cool."

Coyle and staff were going over different moves on Monday, giving them the proper technique on how to do a takedown and a move that keeps the opponent on the mat, leading to a pin.

"I love holding this camp, teaching the kids proper technique," Coyle said. "I also love getting to know the kids and also help them with things that they can use while they are off the mat as well."
