Karen Ruth Tomlinson, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away at home in Bakersfield on June 9, 2024 after a prolonged illness. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Baby Meek; parents, Violet Rhea and James Paul Tomlinson; sister, Julia Faye Cable; brother and sister-in-law, James and Barbara Tomlinson; and numerous friends.
She leaves behind her daughter, Lynn Ross (Meek); son-in-law, Kevin Ross; grandsons Michael Ross and Wolfgang Lopez; best friend, Janis Branch; ex-husband, Burl Meek; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Karen was born on Feb. 11, 1945, in Brawley, Calif. She grew up in Brawley, where she graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1963. In high school she was in the Nurses' Club, was FHA president and considered a "great tennis player." After high school, Karen attended Imperial Valley College, where she was a member of the Madrigal Singers and was publicity chairman for Psi Sigma Chi. Karen married Burl Meek in Brawley on Aug. 1, 1964.
Karen and her family moved to Shafter in 1980. In Shafter, Karen made many life-long friends who she enjoyed spending time with. She spent countless hours supporting Shafter High School fundraising, barbecues and Junior Miss. Karen later moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, and then returned to Shafter a few years later.
Karen was known for her sense of humor, love of her family and deep bond with her close friends. Karen was a loving, supportive mother. She loved her grandsons immensely and was proud of the men they became. She liked to brag about their accomplishments. She enjoyed working as a care companion and as the activities director of a long-term care facility.
Services will be held Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Ave., Bakersfield. There will be a lunch following the service at Mom's House (her favorite restaurant), 2681 Calloway Drive, Bakersfield.
