Accolades keep coming for SHS spring sports

The Shafter High Spring Sports programs continued to receive honors, with several of their athletes being named to the BVarsity All Area Spring Sports teams.

On the track, sophomore Jocelyn Pierucci received a First Team award for the All Area Track team, recognizing her outstanding sophomore season in the throwing ring. Pierucci won the South Sequoia League titles in both the discus and the shot put this year, dominating her competition, winning some events by several feet.

Pierucci then got first place in the Central Section meet, qualifying her for the Central Section Masters meet at Buchanan High School. This meet determines who qualifies for the State Track meet. Pierucci just missed qualifying for a State bid, coming in fourth in the event at the Section meet.

Shafter High also had the most historic baseball team in school history, as the Generals won the Central Section title for the first time in history. The team came in seeded fourth, beating a team from Mirantes in the first round. In the second round, they beat a team from Firebaugh, setting up a game with rival Wasco. The Generals beat Wasco, getting them to the championship game against Madera Matilda Torres. Shafter blanked the Toros 8-0 for the Section championship. This qualified them for the school's first trip to the State tournament. Shafter beat Eagle Rock, setting up a game with SSL foe Chavez High, who beat the Generals in extra innings.

The Generals ended with one of their stars, pitcher Matteo Martinez being named to the All Area First Team. The Generals also had two other athletes make the All Area teams for their respective sports. Zale Mantas made the First Team All Area team for golf, as he became the first Shafter golfer to qualify for the Regional golf tournament in its history. Sara Jane Osborne became the first swimmer from Shafter High School to qualify for the State Swimming meet. Osborn was named to the All Area First Team for Swimming, along with teammate Josephine Martin, who was named to the All Area Second Team. Osborn won SSL titles in two events, as well as winning a Section title in the Freestyle event.
