Shafter is continuing its efforts to improve the city's roadways, utilizing a variety of funds that have been made available through different grants from the state of California.
The city announced that they would be working on a list of roads starting this week, and warned the public to expect delays wherever the work is.
Sand sealing work began early this week, beginning with Poplar Avenue between between Fresno Avenue and Central Valley Highway. On Tuesday, it was Poplar Avenue between Lerdo Highway and Los Angeles Avenue. Wednesday, Los Angeles Avenue was closed from Poplar Avenue to about a half-mile outside of the city limits.
Los Angeles Avenue will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 15, between Poplar Avenue and Spectrum Avenue. On Friday, Aug. 16, Riverside Street will be closed from Shafter Avenue to the city limits heading west.
With parents preparing their kids for school this week, the city is urging them to plan ahead and map out alternative routes if needed.
Public Works Director Michael James said that they apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, "We also appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this time."
The city also is preparing the residents for an upcoming road closure that will be a little more lengthy than just one day. From Monday, Aug. 19, to Sunday, Sept. 15, Zerker Road will be closed in both directions between Seventh Standard Road and New Kappitel Court. It will be closed for reconstruction and maintenance work that will take approximately four weeks. "We are encouraging residents to plan alternate routes during this time and appreciate everyone's cooperation," Jame said.
In other city news, the city is celebrating their annual Selfie Day, in which residents were encouraged to take selfies of themselves at the City Hall building and post the pictures on the city's link. Participants received snow cones for their contributions. "This event has become very popular and gets a bigger response every year," said Rachel Zermeno, the event coordinator.
