Serving the community since 1922
The Shafter Recreation Center, along with Dignity Health, held a photo exhibition including its seniors and their different health journeys with the Dignity Health program for seniors.
The Shafter Recreation Department has been active in the well being and health of many seniors here, offering a variety of classes and activities aiming to keep them active and healthy.
Shafter Recreation Director Phillip Jimenez said that the programs are a great way for seniors to remain active and engaged. "Dignity Health has brought us health screenings, nutrition and exercise classes, and incentives that have helped us build regular attendance and participation and so much more."
Jimenez also said that the department works hard in maintaining a positive atmosphere for the seniors, making the classes and programs fun and engaging seniors looking to keep active and engaged.
At the photo exhibit and testimonials, community members, along with the seniors, friends and their families, heard individual stories and enjoyed snacks, agua frescas and coffees from Western Woodlands.
The event reflected both the physical and the mental gains of those who participated in the programs held at the Walker Senior Center weekly. They are part of Dignity Health's Enhanced Fitness programs, which began in 2022.
The Shafter Recreation Department also offers seniors chair aerobics classes, arts and crafts classes, Zumba classes, regular lunches and fun trips for the seniors, such as to the mall, the beach, or other excursions.
One participant who was thankful for the program was local superstar Albert Barrera. Barrera is well-known for his many involvements with the youth of Shafter coaching football and other sports. Barrera had a health setback, and he said the program really came to the rescue. "I was getting real depressed, because I was usually out coaching football, always involved in everything. I started coming here, and it was a lifesaver. Everyone was always so happy, and I could feel the joy, the love, and I really needed that."
The photos were reflective of the joy that the seniors felt in the program, with all smiles and positive energy. Cecibel Llamas, who also is a participant said, "I had a lot of problems with my knees, and the exercises really helped strengthen me so much. It has been a real big help."
