Clean-up day aims to keep Wasco beautiful

On Saturday, Oct. 19, Code Compliance and its partners will come together to keep Wasco beautiful with a Community Clean-Up event at Barker Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event, sponsored by American Refuse, aims to collect bulky waste and prevent illegal dumping.

Code Compliance Officer Sergio Gonzalez is leading the initiative. "The City of Wasco's Code Compliance has been running this program for over a decade, and each time, the amount we collect shows just how much the community needs it. Over the years, we've collected hundreds of tons of bulky waste that could have ended up as illegal dumping.

"Our goal is to beautify Wasco by collecting as much bulky waste as possible. We'll be accepting items like furniture, home appliances, water heaters, mattresses, TVs, large toys and any discarded waste that doesn't fit in regular trash cans. We'll also collect e-waste, including old computers and electronics.

"We hold these events twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. It's a great way to deter illegal dumping in alleyways and helps the community avoid long trips and costs associated with dumping items at landfills."

A unique feature of the clean-up is the bulky waste pick-up service. "People can call 661-758-7216 and register by October 17 to have their items picked up from an accessible location, like their driveway or alley. This service is especially helpful for those without trucks or trailers," Gonzalez said.

The community's response to the bulky waste drop-off has been overwhelmingly positive. "People are extremely grateful for the opportunity to declutter their homes and yards. Many have had items taking up space for years."

To make the event a success, Gonzalez is seeking 30 to 50 volunteers. "We need the community's help – students, community organizations, churches, anyone who wants to help beautify Wasco. Volunteers will walk through streets and alleyways, picking up litter and garbage. We'll provide gloves, trash pickers, trash bags and safety vests. Volunteers always enjoy their time with us and get a free lunch afterward. For students, they can earn community service hours, which are beneficial for college applications.

"We have great sponsors. American Refuse is our biggest partner, donating employees, trucks and dumpsters. Alianza Recycling & Recovery handles the e-waste, the Wasco Recreation and Parks District provides the location and the Wasco Rotary Club sponsors lunch. Kern County Public Works is also a sponsor. We're grateful to have students from Wasco High and the middle schools helping out."

Interested volunteers can call 661-758-7216 or email segonzalezjr@cityofwasco.org. Minors need a waiver signed by an adult.
