Marlys Goodrich celebrates 95th birthday

Marlys Goodrich was surrounded by nursing staff and friends on Monday afternoon as they celebrated Goodrich's 95th birthday. Goodrich was wheeled in with a sash and tiara on, looking regal as she was surprised by the unexpected celebration.

She was all smiles as everyone yelled "Happy Birthday" and sang it to her as she looked at the large cake and sheet of cupcakes that were prepared by staff at the Shafter Nursing Care Center.

The center's business development director, Elena Espinoza, said that Goodrich is a joy to have as a resident and she deserved a special event to commemorate her milestone.

Goodrich is still very active, with a sharp wit and mind, as well as great hands that still enjoy doing a variety of activities.

When asked what her secret to such a long life was, Goodrich commented, "The secret is to follow God and all of His commandments." Happy birthdays were said by everyone, from her favorite nurse,Taj, who fawned over her throughout the celebration, as well as her fellow residents who were smiling and enjoying the occasion.

Goodrich attended Lutheran churches until she began going to the Seventh Day Adventist churches in Bakersfield and Shafter.

Goodrich was born in Hazel, S.D., and grew up through her childhood in a couple of places in South Dakota. She was married at 19, and she and her husband ran a ranch in the state for over 35 years.

Goodrich and her husband then moved to Austin, Texas. "It was lucky that we did, because not too long after we moved, the mines started shutting down, destroying a lot of the smaller towns in South Dakota."

Goodrich's daughter suggested that they move near her in Nevada, which they did for over 10 years. She then moved to Bakersfield in 2005. She lived in an assisted living facility until about 6 years ago, when she badly broke her leg. This made it necessary for her to find a home that she could move into. "I read a really good report about this home and decided to move here. My friends were not able to visit me very often because they couldn't drive, or they were unable to travel to Shafter. But, I have made so many good friends here, and the staff are wonderful."

Goodrich still keeps busy crocheting, reading, drawing and painting. "I want to thank everyone here who came to celebrate with me, and everyone has been so nice here. I love it here and I am really lucky to be here with all of you."
