The matchup between the Shafter High volleyball team and rival Wasco, in a battle for first place in the SSL, lived up to its billing, with the two teams battling it out for four tough sets, with the Lady Generals coming out on top 3-1 last Thursday night.
Shafter came out in the first game swinging, with superb hitting by Sydnee Macias and serving by Rilyn Hanner. Shafter won the first game, 25-22. Wasco came back and dominated the second game. They were hitting well, and Shafter couldn't get any consistency with their passing and setting for any scoring opportunities. The Lady Tigers won the second game, 25-13.
But in the third game, the Lady Generals came alive again, regaining the momentum and form that they showed in the first game. Shafter took that game, 25-21.
The fourth game saw five different lead changes, with each team trading punches in the form of scoring rallies.
The Lady Generals showed their resolve and experience in tough situations, handling the pressure moments a little better than the Tigers, coming out on top for the match deciding game 25-20.
The win keeps the Lady Generals perfect in the SSL at 6-0, 20-3-1 overall. Shafter is ranked #5 in Kern County, with only higher division teams, such as Division I Centennial and Liberty, above them.
Shafter will look to keep their perfect SSL record intact when they take on the Wildcats of Taft High on Thursday night, beginning at 6:15 p.m.
