Friendship, rivalry unite at breakfast

During Shafter/Wasco High rivalry week, an annual breakfast brings together football players, cheerleaders and Associated Student Body members from both schools. This gathering kicks off the day leading up to the highly anticipated football game and takes place before the rallies at each other's campuses. It's a friendly, spirited exchange that fuels school pride and amps up excitement for the big night, where anything can happen.

This year, the breakfast took place at Wasco High School, where the ASB members put a lot of effort into organizing the event. WHS ASB President Daelyn Smith expressed pride in how his team decorated the cafeteria with motivational posters and signs to show school enthusiasm. They served French toast, hearty eggs, sausage, orange juice and muffins. "We wanted to energize our players for the big game," she said.

WHS varsity cheerleader Stephanie Ruiz noted that the breakfast not only created a bond between the Shafter students but also helped them make lasting memories. "It's good that we get along with the other cheerleaders. We get to have fun, get to know each other and we can both shine during our performances at our rallies."

For Uriah Salcido, a Shafter High School football player, the breakfast is a good time. His favorite part is the food and the camaraderie, as well as the introductions between players and cheerleaders. "And giving each other gifts. We come and build up some energy to get us ready for tonight. It's a cool morning to bring both our schools together." He added, "We don't hate each other. It's a tradition, and I think it's all in fun. We get to shake hands here, so it's a nice gesture."

"I think it's great and makes the exchange rallies special," SHS head varsity coach Jerald Pierucci shared. "So many times, they are faceless individuals on film, and this makes it more personal. You get to see the person you are going to do battle with, and it's great for all the other individuals, like the ASB and cheerleaders, who put so much time into the week. So, I think that is what is cool as well. It's more than just the football team; there's a whole community we get to celebrate."

Camryn Eubanks, a varsity cheerleader at Shafter High for all four years, enjoyed mingling with the other cheerleaders at the breakfast. "It's a good experience to see how rivalries can unite and share our love for this tradition." Though she felt a competitive vibe, it was still welcoming. "With WHS hosting a delicious breakfast, they welcomed us with open arms, and Shafter really appreciated them for that."
