Light up the season, Wasco style

The Light Up Wasco Christmas Cruise is more than just a holiday event; it's a celebration of community spirit, creativity and the magic of the season. On Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 18 and 19, the Wasco Recreation and Parks District, in partnership with the City of Wasco, invites families, friends and neighbors to embark on a magical drive through Wasco, where homes are transformed into displays of holiday lights and decorations.

Each stop on the map along the cruise through Wasco, where guests tour beautifully decorated homes in Christmas themes, is a testament to the creativity and holiday cheer of residents. "This event brings us together to share the joy of the holidays. It's a chance to connect with your community in a fun, festive way, whether you're decorating your home or admiring the artistry of others. With prizes awarded for the best-decorated homes, participants bring their A-game, making every display a delightful surprise. The judging on Dec. 20 ensures a thrilling conclusion to the cruise," WRPD District Manager Chris Serna said.

Homeowners go above and beyond with imaginative themes, from traditional winter wonderlands to whimsical holiday villages. Displays feature life-sized inflatables, animatronic characters, custom-built holiday scenes, and interactive elements such as moving trains or singing Santa figures. Participants aim to outshine one another, knowing prizes will be awarded to the top three displays, adding to the event's excitement.

The Light Up Wasco Christmas Cruise offers an enchanting experience for all ages. Guests can marvel at homes adorned with dazzling lights and decorations, creating a magical holiday atmosphere. Visitors can meet the delightful Gingerbread Men for photo opportunities and holiday cheer. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be there to hear Christmas wishes and spread joy. Families can drop off letters to Santa in a special mailbox and receive a personal reply.

For a guided experience, attendees can ride the City of Wasco Dial-a-Ride bus, colorfully decorated in Christmas lights. "It's an eco-friendly option where you can share the ride with others and enjoy the lights while minimizing your carbon footprint or for families that don't have a vehicle or can't afford to fill up their gas tanks," Serna said. Two tours will take place each night at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Seats are limited, so call 758-7222 to reserve your spot in advance.

For those driving themselves, meet at Barker Park on the south side of the community hall to greet Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Gingerbread Men before joining the cruise behind the Dial-a-Ride bus.

The Light Up Wasco Christmas Cruise has become a cherished tradition, spreading holiday joy and bringing the community closer together. "From the twinkle of lights to the laughter and joy of those on the cruise, this event creates cherished memories for all ages. It's a time to slow down, enjoy the beauty of the season, and appreciate the effort that makes Wasco shine so brightly," Serna said.

Residents can be a part of the event and decorate their homes. Register at wascoparks.com for free by Sunday, Dec. 15, to be included in the Home Cruise Map. Start the route at Barker Park by saying "hello" to Santa between 5 and 6:30 p.m. in the district parking lot, 1202 Poplar South entrance.
