Richland teacher arrested on child abuse charges

Zachary McGraw, a sixth-grade teacher at Golden Oak Elementary in Shafter, was arrested on Monday for allegedly possessing child abuse materials, according to officials. The 38-year-old was detained at his Bakersfield home in the 15000 block of Pinion Court, near Hageman Road and Rudd Avenue.

McGraw was taken into custody around 7 a.m. on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material and intending to distribute obscene content involving a minor under 18. According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office inmate search page, he is being held on $20,000 bail and was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday.

An 11-year veteran of the Richland School District, McGraw's arrest prompted a statement from Superintendent Rosa A. Romero, who said, "These allegations are deeply concerning, and we are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation."

She added that there was no evidence to suggest that the incident involved any students. "As this is a personnel matter and part of an active investigation, the district will not be making further comments. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all."
