Shafter Mennonite Church hosts Christmas celebration

The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church hosted its annual "Come Celebrate Christmas" recently. It was a festive event featuring a Christmas tree lighting, food trucks, pop-up vendors, hayrides, live music, bounce houses, crafts, photo opportunities, face painting,a s'mores station and a family nativity experience.

"We wanted to tie this event in with other holiday community events in Shafter and offer something similar at our church for the community," Pastor Pat Coyle explained about the Dec. 8 event. "We have a good-sized campus with several spaces, including our worship center, a downstairs area called Base Camp for elementary school children ages four to sixth grade, a gymnasium for sports and a large dining room. All of these areas were open for people to explore during the event."

He added that while planning, they focused on activities the community would enjoy and ways to serve. "There was something for every age at the event. Of course, we'd love for attendees to join us for services if they're looking for a church home."

Guests received campus maps and information about church services, including details about their choir program and Christmas services. "This event was a way of inviting the community in and providing a welcoming place to worship if they're searching for one. We designed activities that anyone would feel comfortable participating in. If they wanted more information, we made it available to them."

The event drew 300 attendees. "It was a great night, and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time," Pastor Coyle said. They're excited to host it again next year, with plans for a bigger and better celebration for Shafter.
