The accolades for the Shafter High Generals football team continued as several of the players were bestowed with awards recently.
The recipients were led by junior Mariyon Sloan, who was named the South Sequoia League MVP. Sloan stepped into the quarterback position with the absence of Ezekiel Osborn after the second week of the season against Arvin. Sloan gained over 1,400 yards rushing for the season, as well as having over 300 yards receiving. Including punt returns and kickoff returns, Sloan had a little over 2,000 in total yards. He also had over 20 touchdowns.
Sloan had previously been named an Athlete of the Year by KBAK-TV's Hometown Sports.
In addition to Sloan, the Generals also had the Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Nick Rossette. Rossette led a Generals defense that had four shutouts on the year and only gave up an average of 10 points a game. Rossette led the league in tackles with 77 and also made quarterbacks' lives stressful while spending a lot of time in the opponents' backfield.
Landon Monreal added to Shafter's awards with being named the SSL Lineman of the Year. Monreal led a line that helped Sloan, Christopher Espinoza and Cash Gutierrez lead the SSL in offensive production, as well as supplying Shafter's quarterbacks with the time to find receivers on their way to an undefeated SSL season.
Being named to the First Team South Sequoia League were Generals Ethan Dunlap, Robert Aguirre, JJ Vasquez, Christopher Espinoza and Matthew Cordova. Daniel Rodriguez, Daniel Olvera, Arti Chavolla, Alex Reyna and Urian Salcido were named to the SSL Second Team.
With the majority of these players returning next year, the Generals will be looking to improve on this amazing season.
Looking further into the future, the outlook for Generals football looks very bright. The Shafter junior varsity team had a very successful season, as well as having three National Conference Champions in the Shafter Youth Football Commanders. Shafter's freshman, sophomore and varsity teams all won the season-ending championships in the National Conference.
