Suspects jailed after standoff on Riverside

Kern County sheriff’s deputies arrested two brothers last week west of Shafter while searching for a wanted individual. The arrests occurred in the 25700 block of Riverside Street, where Joe Garnica, 40, and Alonzo Garnica, 33, were taken into custody.

The situation on Thursday escalated when one of the brothers attempted to flee and barricaded himself inside the residence. Deputies successfully negotiated with Joe Garnica, who surrendered after 20 minutes.

During a search of the home, deputies discovered two loaded firearms. Both men were arrested on suspicion of being felons in possession of a firearm and ammunition, participation in a criminal street gang, conspiracy and resisting arrest.
